The Danish Gaming Authority is collaborating with the National Research Center for Welfare Studies and Analysis to investigate the relationship between youth and gambling.

This initiative, a component of Denmark’s strategy to address problematic gambling, will analyze the connection between gambling and young people’s video game engagement.

The research will concentrate on online games, particularly examining how children and adolescents are exposed to gambling-related elements within these games.

The study will explore how game mechanics influence the gaming experience, and whether this exposure impacts young people’s everyday lives. It will also delve into the paid aspects of online games, such as purchasing loot boxes or in-game items, and how this affects gameplay.

The Danish Gaming Authority, in collaboration with VIVE, will conduct interviews with adolescents and young adults aged 13 to 25 who have encountered significant issues with video games or gambling.

The project is anticipated to be finished in the spring of 2021, and the Danish Gaming Authority and VIVE intend to release a comprehensive report, as well as compose several academic papers based on the findings.

This research project is the third significant announcement made by the Danish Gaming Authority this week. The regulatory body also modified the technical and reporting requirements for online gambling licenses, necessitating self-exclusion checks prior to push notifications and establishing a new reporting category for virtual games.

The Danish Gaming Authority also encouraged licensed gambling operators yesterday (June 25) to prepare for modifications to the country’s national identity identification scheme, with a new system scheduled to replace NemID next year.

MitID will be introduced in May 2021 to replace NemID, which is the online verification solution utilized by nearly all Danish citizens to access online bank accounts, communicate with public institutions, and verify their identity for digital services such as online gambling.
