The Golden State is nearing the authorization of internet poker. A crucial legislative body unanimously greenlit legislation AB 2863, intended to ultimately oversee the pastime within the state.

Nevertheless, the road ahead is not devoid of hurdles. Several indigenous Californian groups, encompassing influential entities such as the Pechanga and Agua Caliente, have expressed staunch disapproval. They contend against permitting businesses that persisted in operating within the US after internet wagering was curtailed in 2006 from engaging in the freshly regulated domain. This particularly alludes to corporations like PokerStars, which evolved into a contentious participant during that era.

Despite these apprehensions, the legislation itself doesn’t categorically prohibit such enterprises. Notably, PokerStars has previously collaborated with other tribes and gaming establishments in California, aspiring to be a constituent of the legal market if and when it commences.

This recent advancement succeeds a phase of inactivity following encouraging headway in 2022, offering optimism to advocates of online poker in California.

This legislation, introduced by California Assemblymember Adam Gray, who also presented AB 2863, signifies a joint endeavor with Assemblymember Reginald Jones-Sawyer, a proponent of internet poker through AB 167 in the previous year.

The present legislation departs from its precursor by instituting specific regulatory wording. A crucial element in AB 2863 designates the initial $60 million in yearly earnings to California’s equine racing sector. The legislation establishes the lawful wagering age at 21.

Gray remarked, “Following numerous revisions and discussions with interested parties and consumer representatives, two principal apprehensions persisted for dissenters: equine racing and appropriateness. Presently, we possess language to tackle equine racing, and appropriateness deliberations are continuing.”

The legislation now proceeds to the Assembly Appropriations Committee, where it necessitates a supermajority vote to progress to the Senate.
