The United Kingdom’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) made a ruling against Festival Free Bets concerning a social media message featuring online personality Astrid Wett. The issue revolved around the inclusion of Wett, who was younger than 25 when the post appeared (March 12, 2024), possibly breaching regulations on wagering promotions.

The ASA, referencing its guidelines, stressed that individuals below the age of 25 should not have prominent parts in gambling advertisements unless betting takes place directly on the advertised service. Wett was just 23 years old at the time. The specific post was found on Wett’s X (previously Twitter) profile and displayed her endorsing Festival Free Bets at the Cheltenham racetrack.

Astrid Wett has subsequently expressed regret for the infringement, affirming her dedication to complying with advertising rules. She acknowledged being uninformed about the age limitations for gambling promotions, believing that being of legal age (18) was adequate. Festival Free Bets remained silent on the ASA’s inquiries. The ASA voiced apprehension regarding this absence of collaboration, deeming it irresponsible.

The United Kingdom’s advertising sector has experienced some recent turbulence. It appears the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is taking a firm stance against gambling entities aiming promotions at young individuals. A “Wager Free for the Festival” campaign was halted for employing visuals potentially enticing to those below the age of 25. This action follows a separate judgment against ProgressPlay just last week, where a promotional effort on their Jeffbet platform also drew scrutiny. The ASA seems to be significantly strengthening its control over the advertising practices of these businesses, particularly when it comes to safeguarding youth audiences.
